5 Things to Do Before Your Mini Session: A Santa Clarita Checklist

Mini sessions are quick by design. Fifteen minutes might sound short, but it is plenty of time to create a beautiful gallery of your family when everyone shows up ready.

As a Santa Clarita family photographer, I have learned exactly which families have the easiest, happiest sessions. It is not the families with the most expensive outfits or the most well-behaved toddlers. It is the families who did five simple things before they arrived. None of them take much time, and together they are the difference between a stressful photo day and one you actually enjoy. Here is my checklist.

1. Plan outfits a week ahead

Outfit stress is the number one thing that steals the joy out of photo day. Give yourself a full week of buffer so nothing is a last-minute scramble.

Start with a color palette, not matching outfits. My favorite fall combination for Santa Clarita golden hour: cream, warm beige, soft sage, and dusty rose, with earth tones like camel and rust mixed in. Coordinate across the family by varying tones and textures instead of dressing everyone identically.

Lay everything out on the bed a few days before the session, shoes and accessories included. If something does not fit right or a shirt looks washed out next to the others, you will catch it in time. And if you are unsure, send me a message.

2. Arrive 10 minutes early so the kids can play first

This is my biggest secret weapon, and it works every single time.

Kids who have been sitting in a car seat for twenty minutes arrive wiggly. Kids who have had ten minutes to run around, explore the location, and burn off that energy arrive relaxed. Relaxed kids give you the real smiles, the unposed laughter, the photos you actually want on your wall.

So plan to arrive early. Let them climb a rock, chase each other on the trail, pick up an interesting stick. By the time we start, they will be ready, and those first explorations often become some of my favorite candid shots of the day.

3. Pack a snack bribe

Never underestimate the power of a well-timed snack. A little something between shots can reset a tired toddler, buy you two more minutes of cooperation, or turn tears into giggles faster than anything else I know.

Keep it non-messy. Cheerios, fruit snacks, apple slices, crackers. Skip anything chocolate, sticky, or brightly colored that could stain clothes or faces right before photos. A water bottle is essential too, especially if your session is on one of our warmer fall afternoons.

Pro tip: save the favorite treat for the very end as a reward. The kids will associate photo sessions with good things, and next year they will actually look forward to it.

4. Feed everyone before you come

Hangry kids do not smile. It is that simple.

Plan your meal timing around your session. If we are meeting at golden hour, which in the fall means late afternoon, make sure everyone has had a real snack or early dinner first. A fed family is a happy family, and a happy family photographs beautifully.

This goes for the adults too. Photo sessions happen at odd hours. Nobody does their best work on an empty stomach, least of all a parent trying to keep the mood light while a toddler tests every boundary.

5. Let everyone be themselves

Here is the most important item on the list, and the hardest for some parents: let go of perfect.

Do not spend the session hissing "smile!" at your kids or rearranging their hair between every shot. The photos you will love most are not the stiff, everyone-looking-at-the-camera ones. They are the in-between moments: your son mid-laugh, your daughter's hand in yours, the way your partner looks at you when you are not posing.

My job is to guide you into flattering light and natural positions, then step back and let real life happen. Trust the process. The wiggles, the giggles, the chaos, that is your family, and that is what deserves to be documented.

One more thing

If you follow these five steps, I promise your mini session will feel easy. And if something goes sideways anyway, a meltdown, a spilled snack, a sudden refusal to wear shoes, I have seen it all and photographed through it all. Some of my favorite galleries include a little beautiful chaos.

Fall mini sessions are booking now in Santa Clarita: $295 for 15 minutes and 8 hand-edited images, at 10 beautiful locations across Santa Clarita Valley. September through November dates are available, and the light this time of year is truly special. It is the season I look forward to all year.
