Placerita Canyon Photoshoots: Why This Santa Clarita Nature Park Is My Most-Requested Location
If you ask my clients where they want their photos taken, one place comes up more than anywhere else: Placerita Canyon.
Tucked into Newhall at 19152 Placerita Canyon Road, this 350-acre nature park has everything I look for in a session location. Towering oaks, a seasonal creek, a rustic wood bridge, golden light that funnels through the canyon at sunset, and enough variety that every family gets something different. I have photographed maternity sessions, young families, and maternity clients here across every season, and it never disappoints.
Here is my full guide to shooting at Placerita Canyon, including my favorite spots, the best light, and what to know before you go.
The Bridge
The spot everyone asks about. A wood pedestrian bridge crosses Placerita Creek to the canyon's south side, and it photographs beautifully in every season. When the creek is flowing in winter and early spring, you get reflections and movement in the frame. In summer and fall, the dry creek bed and golden grasses give it a completely different, warm feel.
This is where I start most Placerita sessions. It works for full family groups, couples, and maternity portraits.
The Steps or Staircase
Just across the bridge sit the steps, which give you natural levels to pose families, and means no one is hidden behind anyone else, and kids can sit comfortably. It is one of the most practical posing spots in the park and it looks great in photos.
Walker Cabin and the Oak of the Golden Dream
For something with more character, Walker Cabin is a restored 1920s cabin with old western, woodsy charm. It is perfect if your family leans toward boots and denim. Nearby, the Oak of the Golden Dream marks the site of California's first documented gold discovery in 1842, which gives the location a story worth telling.
The Trails and Woodlands
Beyond the main spots, the park has over 12 miles of trails through oak and sycamore woodlands. The short Ecology Trail loop behind the Nature Center is ideal for families with toddlers or for maternity clients who want to stay close to the car. For the more adventurous, the Waterfall Trail leads to a seasonal waterfall that runs after rain.
The Best Light
Placerita Canyon runs east to west, which means golden light funnels straight down the canyon at both ends of the day. Late afternoon to sunset is my favorite window. The light streams through the trees and turns everything warm and soft. Midday can be harsh where the canopy breaks, so I schedule Placerita sessions for the last two hours before sunset whenever possible.
The Best Seasons
Winter and early spring: the creek is flowing, the grass is green, and wildflowers start appearing. This is the lushest the park gets.
Spring: wildflowers and soft greens everywhere.
Summer: dry golden grasses and warm tones. The creek is usually dry, but the shaded trails keep it comfortable.
Fall: subtle color, crisp cool air, and falling leaves. Beautiful for fall family photos without leaving Santa Clarita.
What to Know Before You Go
Parking and entry are free. The park is open sunrise to sunset. The Nature Center building is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm, and closed on Mondays, so plan restroom stops accordingly.
Arrive early on weekends because the lot fills up. Weekday evenings are the quietest and give you the best light with the fewest people in the background.
Wear shoes you can walk in. Most of my favorite spots are within a few hundred yards of the parking lot, but the ground is natural trail, not pavement.
If anyone in your family has allergies, check everyone for ticks after the session, and keep an eye out the way you would on any Southern California trail.
FAQ
Do you need a permit for photos at Placerita Canyon?
Placerita Canyon is a California State Park operated by Los Angeles County. Commercial photography permits exist for larger productions. For a small natural-light portrait session, I handle the logistics. Ask me when you book and I will confirm the current requirements.
When is the creek flowing?
The creek is seasonal. It typically flows in winter and early spring after rain, and goes dry in summer.
Is Placerita Canyon good for maternity photos?
Yes. The trails near the parking lot are flat and accessible, the bridge and amphitheater steps are steps from the car, and the golden light is flattering. I have photographed many maternity sessions here.
Can we bring our dog?
Dogs are allowed on the trails on leash. They are not allowed inside the Nature Center building.
