When to Book Newborn Photos: A Santa Clarita Guide for New Parents
The regret I hear most often from new parents is a simple one: "We meant to book newborn photos, but the weeks got away from us."
If you're reading this while pregnant, that already puts you ahead of the game. Booking newborn photos is easiest when you do it before the baby arrives, back when you still have time to think and plan. Here's exactly when to book, when the session should happen, and what it actually looks like when I photograph your brand-new baby in your home.
When to book: during your second trimester
The best time to reach out is around 20 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. It feels early, I know, but there is a good reason. We pencil your due date onto my calendar, talk through what you want, and the moment your baby arrives, you just send me a quick text. No decision fatigue, no late-night Googling between feedings.
Babies are famously unpredictable about their arrival dates, so I keep newborn bookings flexible on purpose. You don't reserve a specific day; you reserve your place on my calendar around your due date, and we set the exact session date once your little one is here.
What age is best: the first two weeks, with real flexibility
The sweet spot for newborn photos is the first two weeks of life. In those early days, babies are still tiny and curled up, they sleep deeply, and everything about them has that brand-new softness that fades so quickly. If we can photograph your baby somewhere between day 5 and day 14, that is ideal.
But here is the good news: with lifestyle newborn sessions, the window is wide. Unlike traditional posed studio sessions, which really need that sleepy first-week window, relaxed at-home sessions photograph beautifully up to six or even eight weeks. An older newborn is more awake and alert, and those photos are just as precious. So if your baby is already three or four weeks old and you haven't booked yet, it is absolutely not too late. Please reach out anyway.
Why I photograph newborns at home
My newborn sessions are in-home lifestyle sessions, and I believe this is the loveliest way to document a brand-new baby. We photograph your family the way you actually are: snuggled up on the bed, rocking in the nursery, feeding, laughing, gazing at your tiny person like you can't believe they're finally here.
There is no stiff studio setup, no props, no forcing a sleepy baby into a pose. Your home becomes the backdrop, and years from now these photos will remind you not just of what your baby looked like, but of what those days felt like. The couch where you spent a thousand feedings. The nursery you set up with so much love. How small they were in your arms.
No giant diaper bag, no car ride across the Santa Clarita Valley on no sleep. I come to you, and we pause for feeding whenever your baby needs it.
What a session with me actually looks like
If you've pictured traditional newborn photography with beanbags, baskets, and elaborate setups, let that picture go. A session with me is relaxed and baby-led from start to finish.
We begin wherever the light is nicest, usually the master bedroom and the nursery. I photograph the two of you together, each of you alone with the baby, the whole family, and quiet details: tiny fingers wrapped around yours, little feet, the way their head fits in the crook of your neck.
Everything follows your baby's cues. Hungry? We stop and feed. Need a diaper change? We change them. Fussy? We soothe them.
You never have to worry about posing. I'll guide you gently into natural, flattering positions, then step back and let real moments happen. Some of my favorite images are the in-between ones: you kissing the top of their head, a laugh you share when the baby makes a funny face.
How to prepare (it's simpler than you think)
You do not need a spotless house. I mean it. I'll pick two or three spots in your home, and that's all we need. Tidy the surfaces in your bedroom, the nursery, and the living room, and let everything else be.
Dress the baby simply: a plain onesie in white, cream, or a soft neutral, or just a cozy swaddle. Skip busy patterns, stiff outfits, and anything with a logo. For you and your partner, soft neutrals and comfortable textures photograph best. And bare feet look lovely at home, so don't give shoes a second thought.
If you can, feed the baby right before I arrive so they are content and sleepy. But honestly, we build the whole session around feeding anyway, so there is no pressure to get this exactly right.
Siblings and pets are part of the story
One of the best things about photographing at home is how naturally the whole family can join in. Older siblings are in their own space, so they are comfortable, and I work at their pace. We always photograph the big kids first while their energy is high, and it helps to have something fun waiting for them afterward: a special snack, a show, or a grandparent on standby.
And pets are welcome too. Your dog or cat is part of your family story. Give them a little walk or playtime before the session so they are calm, and we will include them in a way that feels natural.
A little note on Santa Clarita light
Homes in the Santa Clarita Valley have such beautiful light, and I plan every session around yours. Many homes in Canyon Country, Valencia, and Saugus get soft, flattering window light in the morning and again in the late afternoon. South-facing windows give gentle, even light through the middle of the day, which is perfect for nurseries. West-facing bedrooms can be golden and dreamy in the late afternoon.
When we plan your session, I'll ask about your windows and which rooms face which direction, so we can find the best spots and pick the most flattering time of day.
Book maternity and newborn together
So many of my families choose to document the whole story: the anticipation and the arrival. If you are in your second trimester and thinking about maternity photos, that is also the perfect moment to reserve your newborn session. One planning conversation, your due date on my calendar, and two galleries that tell the complete story.
Let's get you on the calendar
You don't need to have everything figured out. Just reach out with your due date, and we will plan the rest together. I photograph newborn sessions for families throughout Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County, and every session is relaxed, baby-led, and done in the comfort of your home.
